An Inspirational Song for NaNoWriters

November 2, 2011 By Alison Cherry

Dear NaNoWriMo friends,

I’m so impressed by you. I wish I had sage advice to offer you in your time of need, but I’ve never done NaNoWriMo, so I don’t. But you know what I do have?

An INSPIRATIONAL POP SONG PARODY that I wrote JUST FOR YOU!

So if you’re feeling stressed/overwhelmed/discouraged/depressed/ready to tear out your brain and bang it against the wall until it works again, it’s time to cue up “California Girls” by Katy Perry, turn the sound waaaaaaaaay up, and sing the following lyrics. (It’s even more fun if you cue up a karaoke version of California Girls. Not that I’ve tried it or anything. Just saying.)

If you’re like me and don’t actually own that song, just click here to listen.

Enjoy, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

NANOWRIMO
(to be sung to the tune of “California Girls” by Katy Perry)

(Greetings, writers.
Let’s take a journey.)

I know a time
When your dreams take shape on paper,
Folks think you’re nuts
‘Cause you’ve committed to this caper,
Tearin’ out your hair
As you struggle toward the finish,
Word-count every hour,
Watch your obstacles diminish.

You’re all doing your best
To write fifty-K by the final day,
If you’re feeling stressed out,
Just remember this song,
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

NaNoWriMo writers are the bravest ones,
Building worlds from blood, sweat, and tears,
Fingers flying all across the keyboard,
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

NaNoWriMo writers are the coolest ones,
Starting literary careers,
Churning words out faster than a rocket,
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

I’m so impressed
You’re not afraid to do what scares you,
You twee-ee-eet on my feed
And tell me nothing quite prepares you,

People give you advice,
Like, “Never look back, or you’ll get off track,”
If you feel overwhelmed,
Just remember this song,
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

NaNoWriMo writers are the hottest ones,
Sizzlin’ in the November chill,
Chugging down a gallon of espresso,
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

NaNoWriMo writers are the smartest ones,
Demonstrating ultimate skill,
Come December, there’s a finished novel,
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

NaNoWriMo
Baby, write that book,
NaNoWriMo,
Baby, write that book…
