What sorts of books do you edit?

I have experience working on books for all age groups except for very young children; I don’t edit board books or picture books. I primarily work on fiction, but I’m also happy to edit memoirs and creative nonfiction.

I love working on:

  • young adult, all genres
  • middle grade, all genres
  • contemporary fiction
  • LGBTQIA+ fiction
  • science fiction
  • fantasy
  • thrillers

I am not a good fit for:

  • military fiction
  • spiritual/religious fiction
  • academic writing

I need a developmental edit and a copy edit—can you do them both at the same time?

No, those are two very different services and must be done separately. Most people do big rewrites after a developmental edit, and it’s not worth it to lovingly craft sentences that may not even end up in the final draft. I’m happy to do a developmental edit, wait for you to revise, and then do a copy edit, though!

How much does it cost to hire you?

Editing isn’t one-size-fits-all; I will tailor my services to your specific project! This also means that it’s difficult to quote a flat rate without knowing your book’s word count or how much time and effort it will require. Please reach out to me to discuss your project’s specifications, and after I see a short sample, I can quote you a price.

Will you fact check my book?

I do a fair amount of low-level fact checking as I copy edit. If you write that the sun is setting as your characters walk home from a baseball game, I’ll likely look up what time the sun sets at that time of year and make sure you’re not hours off. If you include the name of a historical figure or celebrity, I will make sure you’ve spelled it right. However, I won’t read full articles to make sure you’ve depicted a historical event with accuracy or check whether you’ve quoted another book correctly.

Do you accept ghostwriting projects?

No, but I can refer you to people who do!

Can you refer me to an agent/get me a book deal?

No editor can guarantee a client a book deal, unfortunately. I don’t have any sway with agents or publishers, nor do I know what specific agents are looking for at any given time. The best thing you can do is make your manuscript and query package as strong as they can possibly be, and I can certainly help with that! I can also point you toward resources for people who are querying.
