In praise of my agent

Because time seems to be flying by at warp speed, I have already arrived at my first publishing anniversary: one year ago today, I signed with my rock star of an agent, Holly Root.

I've already told my "how I got my agent" story here, so I won't reiterate it. Instead, in true Alison Cherry style, I present you with a mildly insane sonnet. Please imagine me reading it aloud while making wild hand gestures.

~~~
IN PRAISE OF MY AGENT
O Holly Root! These past twelve months, you've shown
you are the finest agent in the world!
Last year I was a struggling unknown—
because of you, my whole career unfurled.
When making deals, one cannot fool The Root:
you're bulldog-like in your tenacity.
When giving notes, you're always so astute,
I marvel at your perspecacity.
When I get nervous, flaily, or depressed,
you know just what to say to soothe my brain.
You never condescend or make me stressed
nor do you seem to think that I'm insane.
There's just one thing that causes me dismay:
why must you live three thousand miles away?
~~~

It would take a novella to detail just how awesome Holly is, during which I'd probably devolve into a sappy disaster of a human being while you all sat there tapping your fingers and going, "Isn't this post over yet?" So I'll just say this: my writing feels safe with her. There are few things more frightening than sharing the words you've ripped out of your heart and spent months crafting. I'm unbelievably lucky to have someone so trustworthy and supportive standing by to take those fragile, newborn books from me.

Since I accepted that offer of representation, I haven't had one single moment of doubt that I chose right. I can only hope Holly feels the same.

This was too cute--rhyming "tenacity" with "perspicacity"? I love it! Happy agent-versary to you and Holly. =)
