Best reads of 2012!

It’s time for the BEST READS OF THE YEAR awards!

The rules:

1) These are all books I read for the first time in 2012, though they were not necessarily published in 2012.

2) Books that aren’t coming out until 2013 are not eligible, even if I read them this year.

3) Books are listed in no particular order. It was hard enough to choose a top five in many categories… there’s no way I can RANK them. *pulls out hair*

4) I am not allowed to choose more than five books per category, though I can choose fewer, if I didn’t read enough things I loved enough to merit an award. Because I am like the Pulitzer committee.

5) Books may receive more than one award if they deserve it. [Read more…]

Alison’s 2012 book-buying/reading statistics

I can’t remember,” and I’m like, “*click click click* Hmm, looks like I finished it on May 29th, 2012, and I also know where and when I bought it and how much it cost, SUCKER.” (Yes, I realize this conversation will never happen. JUST HUMOR ME, okay?? Also, you should read WONDER.)

Behold, for your viewing (and nerding) pleasure, my 2012 book statistics.

A guide to the publishing process for non-writers

Lately, I’ve been having a lot of conversations with my non-writer friends that go something like this:

Me: How’s work going?

Them: Oh, okay. I’ve been working really long hours, but I got a nice bonus. How about you?
Me: Pretty good. I turned in my first pass pages for my first book, and ARCs are coming soon. I’m waiting for an edit letter on book 2, and book 3 is out with my betas.
Them: *totally blank stare*

Senior superlatives: literary edition

A few years ago, I started reverting to my high-school-senior self every December and awarding yearbook-style superlatives to the best books I read that year in various categories. I fully intend to do that again this year, but it occurred to me today that the rest of the books in my apartment, some of which I’ve owned for decades, have been getting shafted just because they’re old. I’ve grown so used to seeing them every day that I sometimes forget to give them any attention. So today’s post is dedicated to them.
